mornings are impossible for me. unfortunately i am one of those who will forgo breakfast and makeup for an extra 30 minutes of sleep. i adore the triumph of swiping one's finger across the snooze button: ...ah, time is still on my side.

but, alas, the magic dwindles quickly with each successive swipe until only dregs remain. on my last wish, i make an attempt to rise and it's a slow unfurl--shifting a foot from under the comforter, stretching fingers overhead in lattice form, opening my eyes wide towards the ceiling.

in another five minutes, i'll be up.

but i'm never truly awake in the morning until i make the walk to school with music in my ears. the world seems all too familiar and mundane otherwise. unlike coffee which jars me into anxiety, good music is an easy passage into reality, cushioning the moments when dreams subside under warmth sunlight and, later, the hushed hallways of my school. it tinges the world anew, adds in a dash more gradient, infuses cracks in the scenery with intrigue and becomings.

The Classic (2003)

The movie itself is a bit melodramatic and the ending is too neat for my taste, but i do love the music.

Deli Spice - 고백 (The Confession)

Attack the Gas Station (1999)

In the beginning the film reminded me of certain anti-social japanese films (the semi-nihilist characters, absurd humor, and wonton violence), but thankfully it got off that track--there was good comedy, explanation, and a satisfying ending! Actually, I do remember a Japanese movie released the same year, "Adrenalin Drive" (with Masanobu Ando!), which is similarly awkward funny and joyfully.

Shell - 작은 사랑 (A Little Love)

Le Transperceneige (2012)

"In a post-apocalyptic world, or what's remaining of it after a world war and glaciation, the few survivors find themselves in Earth's last remaining train, named Transperceneige. The train continues to move following a circle in a desert of snow and ice. And, while the poorest live in pathetic conditions, suffering the cold and hunger, those living in the 'premium class' lust, party and live like Kings. The Transperceneige continues to travel in this vicious circle, but one day one of the 'miserables', Proloff, decides to change status quo, discovering all the secrets behind Earth's last train." (Source)

How amazing is this premise? Based off a French comic*, the movie will be directed by Boon Joon Ho ("The Host", "Mother") and produced by Park Chan Wook ("Old Boy"). I am more excited by this lineup than if it were switched around. Boon has never disappointed me and I have confidence that he'll make it amazing.

*in other news, the japanese are making a rurouni kenshin live-action. yuu aoi as megumi? but she's too cute...and awkward. cannot wait to see soujirou though i know it will disappoint.

Little Dragon 10/29

Twice I turn my back on you
I fell flat on my face but didn't lose
Tell me where would I go
Tell me what led you on
I'd love to know

Was it the blue night
Gone fragile
Was it both men
In wonder
Steady gone under
Was it the light ways
So frightening
Was it two wills
One mirror holding us dearer now

Thought I had an answer once
But your random ways swept me along
Colossal signs so I got lost
With so many lovers singing soft

Was it the blue night
Gone fragile
Was it both men
In wonder
Steady gone under
Was it the light ways
So frightening
Was it two wills
One mirror holding us dearer now

she's hearing voices

Recently I have been listening to more music with female vocals, part of my growing appreciation for our most basic instrument. A bit has to do with my taste trending towards electronic for the past two years, where the voice is usually fractured and abstracted into pure sound. A bit has to do with ingesting kpop on a regular basis, where I cannot even begin to understand (thank goodness!) the lyrics besides the standard english word throw-in. This education has over time changed my experience and appreciation of "regular" english songs. Certain voices just do it for me: modest, sweet, clear. And then there are certain songs made on that one second where her voice hits exactly the right note or where the change is exactly what you wanted, and it is absolutely delicious.

solanin

today i listened to adele's "someone like you" a few times. had a bit of a moment to be honest. i think i would much prefer to sing another farewell song,"solanin," from the same titled film. while the film disappointed me (i loved the original manga) this song was on continuous play for quite a while over summer.

[Miyazaki Aoi - 'Solanin']  lyrics

Goodbye, that's enough
You can cope anywhere
Goodbye, I'll manage somehow too
Goodbye, that's what I'll do

later i found out the song was created by asian kung-fu generation. which was such an engrained part of my high school life (partly due to falling asleep daily with the music on) that i had to revisit other old favorites. i find myself having complete musical nostalgia every other month, remembering and reconfirming the best parts of my past. i am so glad to find them as sweet as ever.

The Pillows - Bran-new Lovesong

Asian Kung Fu Generation - Mugen Glider

Plastic Tree - Sink

Deadman - Sakura to Ame

hard times/good times

Photobucket

in court i often have downtime. this is when i drift into sketching. it is a perfect location, stained and straining with human experience, grief, and lives colliding. i usually sit up front with the judge so that i face the "clients," some in prostrated attentiveness as if the rows of cold benches were pews and the judge their revered priest, some in stony, silent indifference, and the worst, rowdy nonbelievers who muttered and whispered their discontent under the bailiffs' watchful eyes.

yet they were all united by their setting, a human circus of drugs, abuse, poverty, and violence. often i would sneak among them, more comfortable to sit in the chaos than pretend i was above it. i was in domestic violence court when i chanced upon the person i drew above. he slept through the entire proceeding. at the end when the judge asked him to come up, this conversation followed:

judge: why were you asleep?
man: sorry sir, i was very tired today.
judge: why were you so tired?
man: i had to wake up at 5 today to get to court, sir.
judge: do you live far away?
man: no sir. i actually moved houses yesterday. over the weekend, i got shot.
.
.
.
judge:......are you fine?
man: yes sir. just tired.

do the glitch.

the glitch mob. introduced two days ago by aaron. i've downloaded their entire discography but so far i've only listened to this album, drink the sea. 6 times. my friend told me their remixes are a lot better, but i refuse to try the others before i've had my fill of this course. i'm a slow eater.

my favorite yesterday and parts of today was "between two points ft. swan". a slow paced spin with the vocals of a siren. now...it's slowly becoming "starve the ego, feed the soul." this song is like nostalgia hitting with a velvet baseball bat. before i knew it, i was already sinking into my childhood, on the swing that my grandpa made me. in that courtyard of grapes, pomegranates, bonsai, and rows and rows of heavenly flowers, twisted branches. i hear the low clucking of hens and chicks locked behind the shed. to get there i must walk through an aisle paved with century old stones. green and the dirt. smells like those summer nights beneath an eastern sky. i miss sitting on my small chair with my grandparents. waving bamboo woven clover-shaped fans, the warm air stirring. and the magic of dusk seemed endless, in waves flowing over my closed eyes.

五月天 Wu Yue Tian Mayday

without a doubt, mayday is the best musical thing to have come out of taiwan, no if, ands, or buts! i remember five years back, buying my very first mayday album out of some hole in the ground near my house in china. it was an unofficial cd; the album cover was highly pixelated, the tracks were a mix-match of songs from their first three albums. but for these past five years there is no end in the amount of love i have for this amateur work of piracy--literally the perfect balance of songs for a self-doubting, youth-worshiping soul such as me. there is nothing better than ashin's voice riling up all the buried emotions within me.

lately, i've been listening nonstop to this album.  i can't get enough of it, so symphonic, so epic.

五月天《闯》
Mayday (Charge)
lyrics and music by Ashin

我 烂命一条 走在路上 影子在地上
I -with my miserable fate- walk this road, my shadow on the ground
像 我的慌张 黏在脚下 抓着我不放
just like my panic, stuck to my feet, holding me tightly
我不懂 我不是这样 我不该这样
I don't understand, i'm not like this, i shouldn't be like this
额头流下的汗 又流进眼眶
sweat runs from my head, dripping into my eyes

为什么 要给我 一颗跳动的心脏
why was i bestowed a beating heart
却忘了 给我飞翔的翅膀
yet neglected a pair of wings to fly
每天我活在这多无聊的地方 多么想要流浪
everyday that i live in this boring place, how i wish to wander forth

为什么 要给我 一颗跳动的心脏
why was i bestowed a beating heart
又把我丢在这寂寞战场
yet abandoned on this lonely battlefield
这世界有多大我就有多彷徨
however vast this world is, is how disturbed i am
有没有一点希望让我去闯 天涯海角
is there any hope for me to charge to the edges of the world?

把 我的灵魂 装进纸箱 寄送到天堂
i will stuff my soul into a paper box and send it to heaven
那 云端的光 会不会是 希望的形状
there, in the light of the cloud's edge, is that hope's form?
每一天 来了又走了
days come and go
匆忙的太阳 感觉自己蒸发
i'm feeling myself evaporate under the hazy sun
慢慢从这个世界上
slowly from this world

(english lyrics by me i.e. loose translation probably with error.)
